this is kpix5 news on kbcw. >> a sellout crowd packs the coliseum. >> we are still $89 million apart. the good news is, we have four days to find a settlement. >> bay area commuters could be in trouble. with time running out, bart and its unions can't agree on how far apart they are. and community concerns prompt pg and e to shut down a large underground pipeline. good evening, the national gas transmission line runs through much of san carlos. kpix5 tells us, pg and e's memo revealed it could fail. >> residents have been worried about the safety of the major gas line that runs beneath their community. thinking of the gas line explosion and wondering, could it happen here? >> that's kind of a scary feeling just because there's a lot of parks and schools in

this area. >> an engineer noting line 147 had an old style seem, had concerns according to the chronicle. and wrote an e-mail questioning whether the line was safe. san carlos officials showed kpix5 that e-mail. >> whether or not it was damaged by their own testing process and whether or not we are sitting on a san bruno situation. >> san carlos declared a state of emergency and friday, the judge ordered the line completely shut down. reduced pressure by 20%, and ordered a third party study. >> study found that the testing did not cause the growth cracks and so point by point is as the employee lifted their questions, we were able to address each one. >> mow spokesman says pg and e will conform with the court order. >> an abundance of caution, we're going to shut down the line as early as monday or tuesday.

>> utility did not say whether any repairs or inspections would be made during a shutdown. company attorneys have about ten days to contest the order. live in the newsroom, i'm don knapp, kpix5. >> the pipeline has been around for quite some time. inspectors believe it dates back to 1929. the clock is ticking towards another possible bart strike. we are five days away from the end of the 60 day cooling off period. the two sides were talking today, but it was mostly about safety and work rules, not the big issues of wages, healthcare, and pensions. the meetings ended mid afternoon and won't resume until monday. there's a lot to discuss. they can't agree on how far apart they are. bart says it is $89 million. the union says it's $30 million. >> make sure that you understand that we need a four- year contract. unions keep demanding a three- year contract. we need to get a four-year contract and that's part of the

disparity in the numbers. >> it was the mediator's decision to take tomorrow off. if there's no deal by thursday night, workers could walk off the job. day five of the government shutdown came and went with no agreement. there was some movement. susan tells us lawmakers agreed to bring back some furloughed workers and pay others. >> many of the workers furloughed will soon be back on the job. defense secretary, chuck hagel, can legally bring back most of the 350,000 civilian department of defense employees. as for the rest of the government workers sitting at home, the house unanimously passed legislation that would give furloughed employees retroactive pay once the shutdown is over. the senate and president are expected to approve. >> doesn't do me any good right now, because i'm not getting paid. >> darren is an it manager for the national science foundation, he is encouraged about back pay, but his wife says the bills are already piling up. >> if those checks don't come

in, what happens to you? >> start praying really hard. >> while hundreds of thousands of workers will go back on the job and others wait for pay, there is still no deal in sight to restart the government. republicans say they want to negotiate healthcare with the president. >> this administration has been almost absent when it comes to discussions and working out our differences. >> the president and testimonies say there will be no negotiations until the government is reopened. >> this crisis could be over in hours. meanwhile, they have a message for lawmakers. >> the house, the senate, and the president all need to come to some sort of consensus. >> something many government workers are no doubt hoping for. cbs news, washington. >> defense contractor says it will furlough about 3,000 employees on monday because of the government shutdown. the company has 6400 employees in palo alto. it's not clear how the furloughs will impact them.

there were two military operations in africa today in the war against terror. one resulted in the capture of a senior al-qaeda leader wanted for years. >> been on the fbi's most wanted list for years. with the $5 million bounty on his head. the senior al-qaeda leader was indicted for the 1998 embassy bombings in kenya and tanzania. hundreds of people were killed. u.s. forces finally caught up on the streets of tripoli, capturing the libyan national in broad daylight. and went after a senior leader in a predawn raid. the pentagon would only say there were some casualties and no americans were injured or killed. the group claimed responsibility for the attack on a shopping mall two weeks ago. more than 60 people were killed in the four-day terrorist assault. cbs news. >> the somali raid was carried

out by seal team 6. immigrants rights groups held rallies across the country today. these marchs in san francisco and san jose were among some 150 nationwide protests. the demonstrators are protesting delay tactics. designed to stall legislation that would create a path to citizenship for people who are in the country illegally. and the events kicked off shortly after governor brown signed a series of bills to protect immigrants. one would prohibit local law enforcement from detaining people for deportation if they are arrested for a minor crime and otherwise eligible to be released. he also signed a measure that will allow undocumented immigrants to be licensed as attorneys in california. well, a program that would provide monthly rent checks to three strike prisoners is about to launch in santa clara county. freed inmates would get $1,000 a month for a year. the money would be paid directly to the landlords.

the idea is to help them get back on their feet. no other county in the state does this. there are about 70 former third strikers and estimated half of them would receive help. a peninsula man is accused of driving drunk and causing a deadly wrong way crash. the chp says 24-year-old, zachary, was going northbound in the southbound lanes at 3:40 this morning. he hit a taxi carrying two passengers. one of the passengers was ejected and killed when a second car hit the cab. the cab driver suffered major injuries. in southern california, this is the aftermath of a fire caused by a big rig that went off the freeway and crashed into a car dealership in oxnard. the crash damaged at least 16 of them. the dealership was closed at the time. the truck was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. gusty winds might have been a

factor. those winds fanned this fast moving brush fire. the flames came right up to the freeway interchange and briefly shut it down. a red flag alert is in effect for the los angeles area through tomorrow evening. a grass fire that sent smoke billowing across the bay area is now 100% contained. it burned more than 1,000 acres yesterday. also destroyed a barn and farm equipment. two people were treated for smoke inhalation, but no one was seriously hurt. it was scoreless through 9, but in the end, the a's came through in a thriller. nobody was in their seats. bases loaded and he comes through. the a's win 1-0 to even the series at a game a piece. no celebration at the coliseum is complete without a slice of walkoff ties. >> come up, it's what you

mexico, it's now weakened to a tropical depression, all watches and warnings have been canceled along the gulf coast. and alameda is getting a $5.7 million makeover. the regional park district is replacing more than 80,000 cubic yards of sand that has been washed away and pumping it in for about two months. the goal is to restore the beach and system to how it was 25 years ago. >> well, the sounds of musicians picking a banjo filling the air at golden gate park this weekend while bluegrass is drawing its usual large crowds, patrick tells us there's something missing this year. >> it's the first weekend of october and with summer now a memory, a familiar sound. the hardly striply bluegrass festival. >> it's a lot of music that is directly related by the fact that it's real. >> hundreds and thousands of people attended the annual
